Research Interests

Since September 2015, I have entered into a new phase of my historical career, having begun a PhD that will examine the life and zoological work of Lord Walter Rothschild. A collaborative PhD, I'm based at both King's College London and the Natural History Museum, South Kensington where I'm based within the Centre for Arts and Humanities Research (CAHR).

I've really enjoyed the first term and am really looking forward to getting even more stuck into this new piece of research over the coming months. I think it's safe to say that the blog will take a different turn in time, so do continue to watch this space for new revelations!

More generally speaking my research interests continue to lie in nineteenth and twentieth century British history, with particular regard for social and cultural issues. Other recent research has seen me continue to examine the expansion and place of the nineteenth century exotic animal trade in Britain, with specific interest paid to businessman and naturalist Charles Jamrach. I've also examined the experience of animals during the Second World War and have looked at the modern history of zoological collections.
